Halcyon Optical Services was established in January 2000 to provide technical expertise to the optical fibre industry. Our chief consultant, Andrew G Hallam, PhD, BSc, MIEEE, MInstP, has been actively involved in optical fibre and integrated optics technology for 30 years and has extensive experience in fibre measurements, optical design, calibration and instrument design.

As former head of the Measurement Standards Department at GN Nettest (formerly PK Technology) he was responsible for setting up and running a calibration laboratory to ISO 9000 standards. His work included the development of a suite of calibration standards, working closely with NPL in the UK and NIST in the US, to achieve traceability for a wide range of fibre test equipment.

Andrew has been an active member of the TIA and IEC standards organisations for many years and has authored several international fibre standards. These include optical fibre geometry measurement, coating characterisation, fibre length measurement and mode power distribution measurement.

With a particular interest in optical design, he holds patents for a high numerical aperture toroidal lens, used in fibre index profiling, a dark-field illumination system for coating geometry measurement, and a mode control device for adjusting the mode distribution in multimode fibres.

He has also served as special advisor to the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) to set up a facility at NPL for measuring the non-linear properties of optical fibres, such as effective area and non-linear refractive index.

Andrew is now the chief consultant of Halcyon Optical Services and is able to offer technical advice and design expertise to the optical fibre and integrated optics industries. Expertise include the design of test instrumentation, Visual Basic programming, optical design, data analysis and patent and technology reviews.

Halcyon Optical Services is based in the south of England near to the historic city of Southampton.
